NICC FIRE RITUAL (HAVAN) RENTAL GUIDELINES

Your Support Makes a Difference

To ensure the safety of all participants and compliance with local regulations, the following guidelines must be followed when conducting a fire ritual (Havan) at NICC:

1. Pre-Approval & Booking

  • All fire ceremonies must be declared at the time of booking and approved by NICC management in advance.
  • Only approved pyres or havan kunds of a controlled size will be permitted indoors.

2. Fire Size & Equipment

  • Fire must be limited to a small ceremonial flame contained within a traditional havan kund or fire-safe vessel not exceeding 18" x 18".
  • Use of flammable liquids or accelerants is strictly prohibited.
  • Only dry wood, ghee, and permitted havan samagri (ritual offerings) may be used.

3. Fire Safety Measures

  • A minimum of two fire extinguishers and a bucket of sand or water must be kept nearby during the ceremony.
  • The renter must appoint a dedicated fire watch person, who will remain on-site for the duration of the event and 30 minutes after the fire is extinguished.

4. Alarm & Fire Department Notification

  • NICC will notify the fire alarm monitoring company in advance and temporarily disable smoke detection in the designated area during the ceremony.
  • NICC will also notify the local fire department in accordance with fire code requirements.
  • Renters may be responsible for any costs associated with fire department responses triggered by improper procedures or lack of disclosure.

5. Fire Watch & Monitoring

  • The designated fire watch person must:
    • Monitor the flame throughout the ceremony.
    • Ensure full extinguishment of the fire at the conclusion.
    • Remain on-site for a minimum of 30 minutes post-event.
  • NICC staff may perform a final inspection before reactivating fire alarms.

6. Ventilation & Cleanup

  • Adequate ventilation must be maintained during and after the ceremony.
  • Ashes and remaining materials must be safely removed and disposed of in fireproof containers off-site.
  • Any damage to the facility or triggering of the fire alarm due to non-compliance may result in loss of security deposit and additional charges.

7. Liability

  • The renter must:
    • Sign a fire safety declaration acknowledging these rules.
    • Provide proof of liability insurance with NICC listed as an additional insured party.
    • Ensure that all participants are aware of and comply with safety protocols.
